Carl Kipp, Jr. Receives Alumnus Award from The Ohio State University

(COLUMBUS, OH) Carl Kipp, Jr., Engineering and Technical Director of Garick, received a Distinguished Alumnus Award from Ohio State’s College of Engineering. Graduating from Ohio State in 1953 with a Bachelor’s degree in Agricultural Engineering, Kipp received this award because of his achievement in the fields of engineering for significant inventions, important research, administrative leadership, and genius in production. The college honored him August 31.

Kipp developed a composting process to turn organic waste products into money. Today, buying a bag of mulch or compost for gardens is commonplace, but 35 years ago, it was unheard of. With a partner, Kipp started a feedlot operation in 1969 in South Charleston, Ohio. Using his engineering experience, he designed a composting process to increase the value of cow manure by mixing it with a form of bark, a waste product from Mead Paper in nearby Chillicothe. Adding other ingredients and building an enclosed facility to speed up the process by controlling air supply to the compost resulted in a commercially viable business. He oversaw construction of the first commercially successful in-vessel composting system in the United States.

In 1978, Kipp and others formed Paygro® Inc., and in 1984, Kipp became the Sole Proprietor and President. Under his leadership, the company pioneered the marketing of bark products, professional potting mixes, and other horticultural products for the consumer market. In September 1998, Garick acquired Paygro.
